Steering Tips It is important to take curves at a reasonable speed.

Page Steering In Emergencies Steering in Emergencies There are times when steering can be more effective than braking. If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy. Ease off the accelerator and then, if there is nothing in the way, steer so that your vehicle straddles the edge of the pavement. For one thing, following too closely reduces your area of vision, especially if you are following a larger vehicle.

Also, you will not have adequate space if the vehicle ahead suddenly slows or stops. Page Loss Of Control Loss of Control Let us review what driving experts say about what happens when the three control systems — brakes, steering, and acceleration — do not have enough friction where the tires meet the road to do what the driver has asked. One reason is that some drivers are likely to be impaired — by alcohol or drugs, with night vision problems, or by fatigue.

Here are some tips on night driving. On a wet road, you cannot stop, accelerate, or turn as well because your tire-to-road traction is not as good as on dry roads.

You will have a lot less traction, or grip, and will need to be very careful. Brake so your wheels always keep rolling and you can still steer. Page You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful. This can cause deadly CO carbon monoxide gas to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill you. You cannot see it or smell it, so you might not know it is in your vehicle. Start the engine again and repeat this only when you feel really uncomfortable from the cold.

But do it as little as possible. Preserve the fuel as long as you can. That will clear the area around your front wheels. If your vehicle has traction control, you should turn your traction control system off. For example, if the trailer is too heavy, the brakes may not work well — or even at all. The Gross Vehicle Weight GVW includes the curb weight of the vehicle, any cargo you may carry in it, and the people who will be riding in the vehicle. Acquaint yourself with the feel of handling and braking with the added weight of the trailer. And always keep in mind that the vehicle you are driving is now a good deal longer and not nearly as responsive as your vehicle is by itself.

Rinse or wipe any spilled coolant from the engine and the compartment. Failure to follow this procedure could cause your engine to overheat and be severely damaged. This will help keep dirt from entering the reservoir. Page Battery Properly torqued wheel nuts are necessary to help prevent brake pulsation.

Brake linings should always be replaced as complete axle sets. Page Jump Starting Vehicle Storage If you are not going to drive your vehicle for 25 days or more, remove the black, negative cable from the battery. This will help keep your battery from running down.

Page 2. Get the vehicles close enough so the jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles are not touching each other. If they are, it could cause a ground connection you do not want. You would not be able to start your vehicle, and the bad grounding could damage the electrical systems. People have been hurt doing this, and some have been blinded.

Check that the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation. If they do, you could get a shock. The vehicles could be damaged too. Before you connect the cables, here are some basic things you should know.

Page Notice: If the jumper cables are connected or removed in the wrong order, electrical shorting may occur and damage the vehicle. The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Always connect and remove the jumper cables in the correct order, making sure that the cables do not touch each other or other metal. Remove the headlamp plastic retainer by pulling it up. Pull the headlamp assembly away from the vehicle and remove the electrical connector. Remove the round dust caps to gain access to the bulbs. Install the electrical connector to the bulb. Install the new bulb by inserting the smallest tab on the bulb base into the matching notch in the retaining ring. Remove the two upper convenience net wing nuts. Pull the carpet away from the rear of the vehicle. Remove the two remaining hex nuts. Pull out the taillamp assembly and disconnect the wiring harness.

Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise to remove it. Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement Windshield wiper blades should be inspected for wear or cracking.
