Four letters of recommendation are required. Applicants may submit more than four letters, if more are needed to support the application adequately. If your school submits a committee letter, it applies the four letter rule. Each trainee accepted into the PSTP will be appointed a program advisor at the beginning of their internship year. Pairing between advisors and trainees will be based on shared research interests and compatible personalities.
The role of the program advisor is to assist the trainee in constructing an individualized training plan that meets the unique needs of each trainee. The program advisors are successful physician-scientists themselves. They will meet with trainees regularly and assist trainees in making major decisions such as choice of subspecialty, research laboratory and additional didactic courses that could be taken during the research portion of a fellowship.
This pathway provides a rigorous clinical training that allows its trainees to complete the internal medicine residency in two years and to enter a subspecialty fellowship during their PGY About 40 percent of Duke medical students graduate with two degrees.
