My problem was at the low end, where it would cut off too soon, meaning that it wasn't good for thin material.

Disclaimer: it was my first TIG welder so some of its limitations may have been me, but when I went to the Syncrowave , I magically got better. Check out midlana. Joined Nov 14, Messages 2, I'm not familiar with it, but I did find the manual for it online which will provide you some specs. Econotig manual Quickly looking through it, one thing stands out. There is some talk about precautions with its high frequency. I know in my welding class the instructor has kept a lot of the older machines around as back ups, but he got rid of all the early high frequency machines as they could cause problems with electronics or as he pointed out all of his newer very electronic welders.

The manual shows a date of so this is a ish year old design. Some really like transformer machines because there isn't much to go wrong with them. A min 30A will limit use on thin metals as KB points out, the Diversion goes down to 10A, my only goes to 20A so this isn't a major issue unless you were planning to do some really thin stuff.

For bucks you can get a new Everlast power tig Thanks NCjeeper , you read my mind on the Everlast unit. That puts you at a 20 year old name brand vs a brand new import. AHP and Everlast have decent reviews from what I've seen and have several options in roughly the same price range. Of course there are those who say the transformer machines will be used by the cockroaches to weld long after we blow ourselves up.

Previous template Next. I ran across the following ad on craigslist. AC mode features high frequency operation. Does not include argon cylinder. I would like to try my hand at TIG welding. I have checked out the spec. Is this a good welder for learning to do TIG welding and is this a good buy? Tags: None. Not a good buy, buy a newer tig like a Comment Post Cancel.

I think that if the machine is in great condition, fairly new you can tell the year by the first two letters of the serial number , and you don't have to pay any shipping, then it's a reasonal buy. I prefer inverters but thats no reason anyone else has to and you can certinly tig weld within it limits, they don't have all the bells and whistles but are solid machines. You can pickup used Maxstar STL's for about the same price but you would not be able to do aluminum, if that is a requirement for you.

Fishy Jim. You're telling him to spend at least twice what this machine would cost for no reason other than it's not a synchrowave. I paid for mine in decent shape back in October. It's a model and had some garage blem issues like a little surface rust , but it was complete foot pedals are over bucks. For the money, this is a great little machine. If space and ease of relocating the unit aren't a concern, I'd look at one of those.

For something small and rather capable the bottom end on the econotig isn't very low at 30A - but you have to go inverter or 3x the money to get something better down there , I think you'd be doing ok. The Econotig is a good machine to learn on.

I got a new one a while ago and I had never tig welded before. It's not the most versatile but at least you have the AC option.
