Community rehabilitation program involved with school transition programs
Consultation should intensify as the eligible student moves further along the school path. Services for eligible students could be added to the transition page of the IEP no later than 16 years of age. VR counselors should work with appropriate school personnel to determine how they plan to disseminate VR information to students and their families. The dissemination could take place at school sponsored events fairs, career nights, college nights, etc.
VR materials will be provided to school personnel so that they can share with parents or guardians. All VR eligible students receive counseling and guidance from a vocational rehabilitation counselor.
High school teachers, school counselors, family members or students may request that a VR counselor become involved early in the transition planning process. Career exploration is foundational in successful transition planning. Participation in this program is available for all eligible inmate-students up to 18 months prior to release. Transition from School to Work OVR Programs and Services Any high school student with a disability who may need vocational guidance and assistance in preparing for, obtaining, or maintaining competitive employment should be considered for referral to the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation OVR.
Ideally, students should be referred two years prior to graduation, although referrals can be made earlier when appropriate. Students with a significant visual impairment can be referred to the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services at any time. Technical assistance may be provided on behalf of students with disabilities with regard to Transition at any age without a formal referral.
At the time of the initial referral, OVR will need the following information about the student to facilitate the application process:.
